If you don’t know about Peter Thiel, the man who brought down Gawker Media by helping to fund Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit and went on to fund Donald Trump’s campaign despite being gay (how? why?) you’ll be delighted to know that he’s now turning his sights toward enriching his long-beleaguered LGBTQ+ cousins by opening a members-only “social club” in San Francisco. The title? “Yass.”
This from the man who pretty much everyone in the LGBTQ+ community truly wishes was not gay. I mean, where to begin.
According to The Guardian:
“The ties to Thiel and Silicon Valley and the decision to open in the Mission, a historically Latino neighborhood that has rapidly gentrified amid the tech boom, means Yass is sure to be controversial.”
No shit. From the concept (a rich club for rich people in the richest part of the country,) to the name itself (reeking of appropriation,) Thiel’s venture is bound to have an…interesting…first few months.
We’ll give the last word on this strange development to David Campos, a former City Official representing San Francisco’s Mission district who told The Guardian:
“The LGBT community in San Francisco, we need a space. But we don’t need a space that is tainted by the hate of Donald Trump.”
Amen, brother.
