Last November, Virginia state rep Danica Roem won an incredible victory over Bob Marshall, her incredibly transphobic opponent for the seat. Roem was officially sworn into office yesterday.
In addition to noting that Roem’s historic victory placed her as the first transgender candidate to win a legislative seat at the table in Virginia, most news outlets have also stressed that Roem, a first-time politician, has spent her time campaigning for basic change in the community, like building better roads and cutting down traffic. While Roem already has a clear sense of what her community needs, we still can’t wait to see what surprises she has in store for Virginia, and for the nation, for the rest of the year.
