24-Hour Fitness in West Hollywood, popular to local residents in the WeHo area, is set to close on November 30th after filing for bankruptcy.
On June 15th 2020 the fitness chain announced that due to the coronavirus pandemic and the financial strain it has caused that it would be closing 18 gyms in the greater Los Angeles area.
Further details announced that roughly 100 locations would be closing nationwide since the coronavirus pandemic forced all gyms to close for over three months and 24-Hour Fitness has not been able to recover from the losses.
The company stated that “the dramatic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy and the fitness industry” had forced it into “a financial restructuring through a voluntary Chapter 11 filing that we expect will make us a stronger company,” reports CBS News. The company is closing 100 clubs across 14 states, leaving it with about 300 clubs, according to CNN.
In June the 24-Hour Fitness SuperSport in West Hollywood was not on the list of gyms closing. However according to a recent statement the company has announced that it would be.
“After many years of serving the community, we are sorry to say that we have not been able to come to lease renewal terms with our landlord and will have to permanently close our West Hollywood club on Tuesday, November 30, at 9 p.m.” read a Facebook post on the 24-Hour Fitness Super Sport West Hollywood location.
The statement continued saying, ““Memberships will be automatically transferred to our Santa Monica Super-Sport club, located less than 8 miles away at 2929 31st in Santa Monica. Members, right now, you also have access to every 24 Hour Fitness location. We look forward to continuing to support you in your journey.”
The Santa Monica Super-Sport club is 8 miles away from the WeHo location and it is unlikely that local clients will make that trip after being able to simply walk to their gym.
It is rumored that a new private luxury fitness club is launching very close to West Hollywood with an affiliation to John Reed Fitness. The new fitness club called Heimat is slated to open on the southeast corner of La Brea Avenue and Romaine Avenue later this year, at the WeHo boundary.
John Reed memberships fare for $130 a month and higher price point than that of 24-Hour Fitness memberships.
