Hello impermanence, my old friend.
Today, word surfaced that the venerable est. 2009 WeHo establishment The Block Party will close next year. Opened by Larry Block in 2009 in the heart of West Hollywood at 8853 Santa Monica Blvd, The Block Party served Boystown citizens for almost 10 solid years and fought a previous closure in January of last year, after Block’s landlord nearly failed to renew his lease.
This year, however, West Hollywood’s The Revolver Bar plans to expand, leaving The Block Party with nowhere else to go. Although Block doesn’t plan to move until sometime next year, the closure is imminent.
The Block Party replaced LGBT bookstore “A Different Light” after its closure in January of 2009. But as West Hollywood changes, it finds ways to remain the same. When questioned as to the space’s new ownership by WeHoville, Block said he’s “really glad it’s Revolver [taking over.] The last thing I would want is to have to close the store and have some Melrose boutique move into the space.”
