The year’s gayest movie is officially at the head of the Oscar race, as of this morning.
When the nominations for the 90th annual Academy Awards came out today, no one was exactly shocked by the presence of a few clear favorites (“Get Out,” “Lady Bird,”) on the list of Best Picture titles. While “Call Me By Your Name” had Oscar buzz surrounding it almost from the moment it first screened at Sundance last year, there was some speculation about the film snagging an Oscar nom due to “Moonlight,” a film dealing with similar themes of sexuality and coming-of-age, having received its big win last year.
Next to “Call Me By Your Name,” another huge queer win is the nomination of lesbian cinematographer Rachel Morrison, who shot Dee Rees’ “Mudbound” this year, as well as the lauded “Fruitvale Station” (2013) and Sound of My Voice” (2011.) Morrison is also slated to film Marvel’s upcoming “Black Panther” movie.
