Glynne and JET2 Voice Actor Zoe Lister Condemn Use of Viral Holiday Ad Audio
Queer British singer Jess Glynne has criticized the White House for pairing her 2015 chart-topping single Hold My Hand with footage of Latino migrants being humiliated, calling the unauthorized use “sick.”
The video, shared Wednesday on the White House’s official Twitter account, features detainees in handcuffs and leg chains boarding a GlobalX aircraft while the upbeat Jet2holidays commercial soundtrack, which includes Glynne’s song and a British voiceover stating “nothing beats a Jet2 holiday,” plays in the background. The post is captioned, “When ICE books you a one-way Jet2 holiday to deportation. Nothing beats it!”
The audio, originally intended for travel promotions, has become a viral trend on TikTok and other platforms, often used in humorous or chaotic video clips intentionally.
The repurposing of the popular commercial for a political message promoting mass deportations has drawn backlash online, including from those directly involved in the original ad campaign.
Zoe Lister, the voice actor behind the Jet2 commercials, told the BBC she was appalled to hear her voice used in a political context she vehemently opposes. “I would never condone my voiceover being used to support Trump and his abhorrent policies,” she said, referring to the administration’s current immigration agenda.
Glynne echoed that disapproval in a social media statement, expressing outrage that her music was used without her consent in a video she described as dehumanizing. “It makes me feel sick,” she said.
