Indie Rock Duo Teams With Filmmaker Erin Lee Carr to Investigate the Scheme
Indie rock icons Tegan and Sara, known for their confessional lyrics and advocacy for the queer community, are the focus of a new documentary that delves into a disturbing chapter of their lives. Directed by Erin Lee Carr, the film uncovers the long-standing catfish scheme that targeted Tegan, her fans, and their inclusive community.

The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara will premiere on Hulu on October 18th.
The duo, celebrated for creating a safe space for LGBTQ+ fans during a time when few bands were open about their identities, saw their world unravel in 2011 when Tegan’s personal files were hacked. The violation revealed the darker side of fame, as a cybercriminal impersonated Tegan to manipulate and deceive fans in a complex catfishing plot that spanned over 15 years.
In the film, Tegan teams up with Carr—known for her work on Britney Vs. Spears—to track down the perpetrator who stalked and terrorized their fanbase. The investigation, which began in 2011, uncovers new victims and potential suspects, revealing shocking twists along the way.
Told through interviews with Tegan, deceived fans, and the band’s personal archives, the documentary is part thriller, part personal journey. It explores themes of love, betrayal, fame, and the vulnerability of online communities.
The documentary is produced by Story Syndicate in association with Carr Lot Productions, with Erin Lee Carr as director and producer, alongside Elyssa Hess and Jenny Eliscu. Executive producers include Tegan Quin, Sara Quin, Dan Cogan, Liz Garbus, Jon Bardin, and Kate Barry.
