West Hollywood Sustainability Town Hall: Zero Waste and Organic Waste Implementation

Meeting to Discuss Senate Bill 1383’s Impact on Methane Reduction and Food Security

The City of West Hollywood, in partnership with Athens Services, will hold a Sustainability Town Hall to discuss zero waste and organic waste implementation in line with Senate Bill 1383. The bill aims to divert 75% of organic waste from landfills below 2014 levels and rescue 20% of surplus edible food by 2025, crucial steps in reducing methane emissions and addressing food insecurity.

The Town Hall is scheduled for Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 6:30 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m., at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. The event is free and open to all West Hollywood community members. Attendees will have the chance to meet City staff and Athens Services representatives to discuss zero waste and sustainability initiatives. Athens Services will also distribute free countertop kitchen pails for organic food waste.

This event is part of West Hollywood’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation. The city has a history of progressive environmental policies, including the 2011 Climate Action Plan, which aimed to reduce local greenhouse gas emissions. The 2021 Climate Action and Adaptation Plan outlines further actions to achieve carbon neutrality.

West Hollywood updates its Climate Action public dashboard biannually, monitoring progress across 60 programs and projects. Additional details on green initiatives can be found in the Go Green section of the city’s website at www.weho.org/community/go-green.
