Let the Wild Rumpus Begin: Maurice Sendak Celebration at Skirball Cultural Center

An Immersive Evening of Art, Music, and Fun Inspired by the Legendary Creator

The Skirball Cultural Center invites you to celebrate the imaginative worlds of Maurice Sendak with a special late-night event on Friday, May 10, from 6:30 to 10:30 pm. Let the wild rumpus begin!

Dubbed “Wild Things Are Happening: The Art of Maurice Sendak,” the event offers exclusive gallery access and programming showcasing over 150 artifacts that highlight Sendak’s creativity. You can purchase tickets and get more information here

Guests can expect a lively atmosphere filled with food, drinks, music, and dancing. Live music will be provided by local LA indie-rock band Worn-Tin, accompanied by the Eastside DIY puppet collective Freak Nature Puppets. Additionally, dublab’s Ale Cohen will set the mood with a DJ set.

Food trucks Love Bird Fried Chicken, Vchos, and Sugo Italiano will be on-site, along with a cash bar and dessert bar in Founders Courtyard (dubbed “Sweet Treats in the ‘Night Kitchen'”) featuring Oma’s Puffers and The Boba Truck.

Attendees can also enjoy a Sendak-inspired tale of natural wonder through dance and music, presented by Director/Choreographer Zoe Rappaport of STORYTELLING THROUGH MOVEMENT (STM). The performance will take place on the front steps and Taper Courtyard.

Highlights of the event include “wild” airbrush tattoos by We Adorn You LA and paper crown-making inspired by Max from “Where the Wild Things Are.”

According to Warner Hiatt, also known as Worn-Tin, the music for the event aims to capture the essence of SoCal life, drawing inspiration from experiences such as long summer days and falling in and out of love.

Freak Nature Puppets, recognized as a leading voice in LA’s “modern puppetry renaissance,” will inject humor and absurdity into the event with their object performances.

Alejandro Cohen, the executive director of dublab, will curate the music for the evening, while Zoe Rappaport will bring her expertise in movement direction and choreography to create an immersive experience for attendees.

Tickets for the event are priced at $10 for general admission, $7 for seniors, students, and kids, and free for members.
