City Honors LGBTQ Women with Weeklong Festivities and Events
The City of West Hollywood has officially designated April 22, 2024, through April 28, 2024, as Lesbian and Queer Women’s Visibility Week, showcasing a commitment to celebrating and recognizing the contributions of LGBTQ women.
Throughout the week, the city will proudly display the Lesbian Pride flag in medians along Santa Monica Boulevard and at West Hollywood City Hall. Additionally, the lanterns adorning Santa Monica Boulevard will be illuminated in pink, orange, white, and red, mirroring the vibrant shades of the Lesbian Pride flag.
Collaborating with the L-Project and Fan Girl Cafe, a series of events will take place to honor Lesbian and Queer Women’s Visibility Week:
- NextGen Coffee and Convo: On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Fan Girl Cafe (8157 Santa Monica Boulevard) will host a panel discussion on queer activism, challenges faced by LGBTQ women in business and advocating for non-binary and gender-nonconforming identities. Panelists Marquita Thomas, Chanel Lumiere, and Melanie Vesey will lead the discussion. This free event will also provide an opportunity for community networking.
- Lesbian Speakers Series Film Screening: On Saturday, April 27, 2024, beginning at 5:30 p.m., the City’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room (625 N. San Vicente Boulevard) will host a screening of the award-winning documentary Ahead of the Curve. The film captures the inspiring journey of Franco Stevens, founder of the world’s most successful lesbian magazine, Curve. Following the screening, Franco Stevens and filmmakers Jen Rainin and Rivkah Beth Medow will engage in a Q&A session. The event will commence with a reception featuring light snacks and refreshments.
- Queer Art in the Park: Concluding the week’s celebrations, West Hollywood Park (647 N. San Vicente Boulevard) will host a Queer Art in the Park gathering on Sunday, April 28, 2024, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees can enjoy lawn games, music, and peruse queer arts and crafts vendors. Admission is free, and guests are encouraged to bring blankets, yoga mats, lawn chairs, sunscreen, and picnic supplies to share in the festivities.
