West Hollywood Provides Free Sandbags for Residents Ahead of SoCal’s Upcoming Heavy Storms

City Initiates Proactive Measures for Flood Preparedness

As heavy storms prepare to sweep through Southern California, the City of West Hollywood is taking proactive measures to assist its residents and businesses. Offering a limited supply of free sand-filled sandbags, the City aims to provide a crucial tool to help direct flowing water away from structures.

West Hollywood residents and businesses can obtain up to 10 free sandbags while supplies last. The sandbags are available for pick-up by appointment at the City’s Operations Center at 7317 Romaine Street. To schedule a pick-up appointment on Thursday or Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., residents and business owners can call (323) 848-6591 or send an email to phertz@weho.org. Those who are Deaf or hard of hearing can call TTY (323) 848-6496.

It’s essential to note that weekend pick-ups are not currently scheduled, and sandbags are available only while supplies last. The City may extend sandbag pick-up into early next week if weather conditions require and supplies permit.

As the heavy rains and cold temperatures persist, the City of West Hollywood encourages residents and businesses to stay prepared. Key recommendations include:

  • Keep emergency supplies on hand, including a flashlight, water, food, a first-aid kit, a portable radio, and extra batteries.
  • Clear all drains and rain gutters on your property to avoid blocking drains.
  • Know how to turn off utilities.
  • Monitor weather forecasts for potential impacts on the area.
  • Subscribe to Alert LA County emergency notifications at https://ready.lacounty.gov/alerts and Nixle public safety alerts by texting your ZIP code to 888-777.

Driving in rainy conditions can be hazardous, leading to increased accident rates. The City advises residents to adjust their driving styles for wet roads and reduced visibility. Key driving tips include slowing down, turning on headlights, using windshield wipers, maintaining a safe distance, avoiding heavy braking, watching for standing water, letting off the accelerator when hydroplaning, and ventilating the car during rain.

Residents can report storm-related issues in the City of West Hollywood by calling (323) 848-6375. For information about structural damage or potential hillside slope movement, contact the City’s Building and Safety Division at (323) 848-6320. Gas leaks or damage can be reported to the Southern California Gas Company at (800) 427-2200, while power outages should be reported to Southern California Edison at (800) 611-1911. For downed power lines or emergencies, residents should call 911.
