West Hollywood Unveils New Leadership: Mayor and Vice Mayor to Take Oath in Annual City Council Reorganization

City Invites Public to Witness Swearing-In Ceremony

By Dolores Quintana

The City of West Hollywood extends an invitation to the public for its upcoming annual city council reorganization and installation meeting, featuring the oath of office ceremony for newly appointed Mayor John M. Erickson and Vice Mayor Chelsea Lee Byers.

Set to take place on Tuesday, January 16, 2023, at 6 p.m., the event will unfold at the City’s Council Chambers and Public Meeting Room, situated at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. Following the ceremony, a reception will be hosted on the second floor of the West Hollywood Library, offering attendees an opportunity to engage with city officials. The entire program, from the meeting to the reception, is open to the public, with limited validated parking available at the nearby West Hollywood Park five-story structure.

The proceedings will be live-broadcast and streamed as part of the regular City Council meeting. Interested parties can tune in to Channel 10 on Spectrum within West Hollywood, visit the City of West Hollywood’s website at www.weho.org/wehotv, or access the City’s WeHoTV YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/wehotv. The City Council meetings can also be viewed on Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, and Roku streaming platforms by searching “WeHoTV” within the respective search functions.

The announcement follows a resolution adopted during the West Hollywood City Council’s regular meeting on December 18, 2023. During this session, the council voted on the selection of the next Mayor and Vice Mayor, changing the title of Mayor Pro Tempore to Vice Mayor as a local preference.

John M. Erickson, the current Mayor Pro Tempore, was elected to the West Hollywood City Council in 2020, and his commitment to a forward-thinking, diverse, and tolerant community has been evident throughout his tenure. With a background in social and economic justice, Erickson has worked tirelessly to advance policies around LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights, environmental issues, and civic engagement. The new Mayor’s priorities include COVID-19 recovery, affordable housing, sustainable transportation, and policies promoting inclusivity.

Chelsea Lee Byers, elected to the West Hollywood City Council in 2022, has a rich history of program partnerships and community engagement. With a focus on social service delivery, climate change mitigation, and creating affordable housing, Byers is committed to enhancing pedestrian and cycling experiences while reducing vehicle dependency. Her work with various organizations and fellowships underscores her dedication to community building and inclusive policies.

The upcoming City Council reorganization marks a significant moment for West Hollywood as the new leadership prepares to guide the city through its next chapter of growth and development. The public is encouraged to participate and witness this transition firsthand.
