West Hollywood to Celebrate Diversity at Spirit Royale Drag Cheerleading Competition

Event Spotlights Drag Culture, Supports HIV/AIDS Wellness, and Promotes Inclusivity

By Dolores Quintana

The City of West Hollywood is proud to announce its co-sponsorship of the Spirit Royale Drag Cheerleading Competition, a dynamic event organized by West Hollywood Cheerleaders and Life Group LA. This collaboration serves as a platform to show support for the vibrant drag community while also raising awareness and essential funds for HIV/AIDS wellness programs.

The proceeds generated from this event will contribute to the noble mission of Life Group LA, a West Hollywood-based organization founded in 2005, committed to providing free HIV/AIDS wellness support for the local community.

Scheduled for Thursday, October 19, 2023, the event will kick off at 6 p.m. (with the competition commencing at 7 p.m.) at the iconic venue, The Abbey, situated at 692 N. Robertson Boulevard. Attendees can anticipate an electrifying showdown featuring drag queens and cheerleaders competing for the prestigious Spirit Royale Trophy. For additional details, RSVP information, and event updates, please visit the dedicated Eventbrite event page.

With a legacy dating back to 1986, West Hollywood Cheerleaders, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization composed of Drag Queens, has made a significant impact. Over the past three decades, the organization’s mission has evolved from addressing the stigma surrounding AIDS and HIV to recognizing and celebrating the achievements of young leaders.

This event holds special significance, aiming to unite diverse communities, including those who are marginalized, particularly in light of current national political dynamics that have seen attacks on the drag and transgender communities. Additionally, the event underscores the values of diversity and inclusion, embodying West Hollywood’s commitment to being a shining example of hope for the entire nation.

The City of West Hollywood’s co-sponsorship aligns seamlessly with its nearly four-decade-long dedication to providing programming and support for LGBTQ+ individuals. In April 2023, the City took a significant step by declaring itself a sanctuary city for transgender people. Throughout its history, the City has been a focal point for drag culture. Moreover, in June 2023, the City proudly introduced its first-ever Drag Laureate through the innovative Drag Laureate program, further cementing its commitment to the vibrant and diverse drag community.
