“Young Queer America” Exhibition Opens Doors July 29 to Tell LGBTQ+ Youth Stories

Maxwell Poth’s Portraits and Isis King’s Voice of Empowerment Shine at Gallery Event

By Dolores Quintana

The Village at Ed Gould Plaza in Los Angeles will come alive on Saturday, July 29, as it hosts the much-anticipated gallery opening of “Young Queer America: Real Stories and Faces of LGBTQ+ Youth,” a photography exhibition and conversation event featuring renowned photographer and activist, Maxwell Poth, and trans actress and model, Isis King.

The event, scheduled from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. PDT, promises an evening of celebration, inclusivity, and a powerful showcase of the struggles and triumphs of LGBTQ+ youth across the United States. Maxwell Poth, known for his commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and advocacy, founded Project Contrast, a nonprofit organization aimed at amplifying the voices of LGBTQ+ youth and providing them with essential resources and support.

“Real Stories and Faces of LGBTQ+ Youth” is Poth’s latest project, a poignant book showcasing the personal journeys of seventy-three queer kids and teenagers from fifteen states. Through vivid portraits and heartfelt narratives, these young individuals offer candid insights into their experiences of coming out and self-discovery. Moreover, they share heartfelt messages of love and solidarity for their fellow LGBTQ+ peers, creating a network of support that transcends geographical boundaries.

The evening will commence with a gallery viewing at 6 p.m., allowing attendees to immerse themselves in the evocative portraits captured by Maxwell Poth during his journey across the nation. Each photograph serves as a window into the unique challenges and resilience of LGBTQ+ youth from various backgrounds and communities.

At 7 p.m., a conversation between Maxwell Poth and Isis King will take center stage, delving deeper into the inspiration behind the project and discussing the impactful stories that shaped “Young Queer America.” Isis King’s contribution as a foreword writer to the book adds an extra layer of significance to the event, bringing her own perspective as a trans icon and lending her voice to the importance of visibility and acceptance.

The event will conclude at 10 p.m., leaving attendees with a renewed sense of empathy, understanding, and a commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ youth in their journey toward self-acceptance and self-love.
To ensure accessibility for all, the venue is ADA accessible, and parking is available on-site in an underground lot. As a gesture of hospitality, refreshments will be provided throughout the event.

“Young Queer America: Real Stories and Faces of LGBTQ+ Youth” is more than just a photography exhibition; it is a testament to the resilience of LGBTQ+ youth and an opportunity to acknowledge their struggles while celebrating their strength and courage.
