Community Launches Urgent Fundraiser to Support Activist Chris Ramirez
The San Gabriel Valley LGBTQ+ community is rallying to support one of its most influential advocates after a sudden tragedy left him grieving and facing urgent financial and medical challenges.
Chris Ramirez, a co-founder of San Gabriel Valley Pride and a longtime activist for equality, recently lost his husband and primary caregiver, Steven Honey, without warning. The couple had been together for 51 years.
Steve’s unexpected passing has left Ramirez, who uses a wheelchair and faces serious health concerns, including diabetes, heart problems, and ongoing dialysis treatments, without essential care and support. In addition to the emotional toll, Ramirez is now struggling with the costs of Steve’s funeral, uncovered medical care, transportation to dialysis, and everyday living expenses.
Friends and community members have launched a GoFundMe campaign with the goal of raising $20,000 within 30 days. The funds will cover burial expenses and help Ramirez maintain stability during this difficult time. Donations will go toward:
- Final burial arrangements for Steve, who had recently passed a physical exam and was in seemingly good health.
- Essential household expenses that Steve had previously helped cover.
- Critical but uncovered home health care services.
“Chris was there for our community when it mattered most,” said Aaron Saenz, a close friend and fellow SGV Pride leader. “He gave his heart to building safe spaces for LGBTQ+ people. Now it’s our turn to show up for him.”

A virtual memorial and community support gathering will also be announced on the GoFundMe page in the coming days.
