While Trump Takes a Seat, Drag Queens Take a Stand in DC
President Donald Trump’s appearance at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday night for a performance of Les Misérables was met with vocal protests, audience backlash, and a notable cast boycott, highlighting growing tensions surrounding his recent influence over the prestigious cultural institution.
The visit marked Trump’s first to the venue since he assumed the self-appointed role of chairman, reshaped the board, and canceled several events he criticized as “too woke.” As he entered the theater, boos erupted from portions of the crowd, briefly drowned out by chants of “USA” from his supporters before dissenting voices regained prominence.
Outside, four drag performers arrived to cheers from onlookers as part of a protest against Trump’s decision to ban drag performances at the Kennedy Center — one of many moves criticized by LGBTQ+ advocates and artists nationwide.
Trump’s favorite musical, Les Misérables, was the evening’s performance, but the show proceeded without the full cast. Approximately half the production’s performers chose to boycott in protest of his presence and his policies. Asked by a reporter about the walkout, Trump responded curtly, “I don’t care.”
First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, Second Lady Usha Vance, and several cabinet members attended the performance alongside Trump. Also present was Richard Grenell, who currently serves as the interim president of the Kennedy Center.
The evening comes amid mounting scrutiny over the state of the Kennedy Center under Trump’s leadership. Both The Washington Post and The New York Times reported significant financial declines at the institution since his takeover.
Internal data cited in the reporting showed steep drops across programming: single-ticket sales fell by 50% in April and May compared to the same period last year, while theater and dance revenue plunged by 82% and 57%, respectively. Subscription numbers also dropped, with the National Symphony Orchestra down 28% and the Washington National Opera down 25%, as reported by Opera Wire.
