West Hollywood Welcomes New Mayor and Vice Mayor at January 13 Ceremony

Community Invited To Attend Annual City Council Oath of Office Event

The City of West Hollywood will host its annual City Council Reorganization and Installation Meeting and Oath of Office Ceremony on Monday, January 13, 2025, at 6 p.m. Chelsea Lee Byers will be sworn in as the city’s next mayor, and John Heilman will assume the role of vice mayor.

The ceremony will take place at the City’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. A reception will follow at the adjacent West Hollywood Park Aquatic and Recreation Center Respite Deck. The event is free and open to the public, with limited validated parking available at the West Hollywood Park five-story structure.

This is the same night when West Hollywood will host the opening of the  Wintery Wonderland Ice Rink.

The West Hollywood City Council selected Byers and Heilman for their respective roles during its regular meeting on December 16, 2024. Councilmembers are elected at large for four-year terms, and the positions of mayor and vice mayor rotate annually among the councilmembers.

The meeting and ceremony will be broadcast live on Channel 10 (Spectrum) within West Hollywood and streamed on the City’s website at www.weho.org/wehotv, as well as the City’s WeHoTV YouTube channel. Viewers can also watch the event on Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, and Roku streaming platforms by searching “WeHoTV.”

Byers, elected to the City Council in November 2022, has focused on social services, climate-change mitigation, emergency resiliency, affordable housing, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, and fostering an inclusive community. Heilman, a founding member of the City Council, was first elected in 1984 and served as the city’s second mayor in 1985. He is among the longest-serving openly gay elected officials in the nation.
