Lafd Contains Blaze to 100 Acres After West Hollywood Hills Faced Evacuation Warning
In a shocking development, a new fire erupted in Runyon Canyon on Wednesday night at 6:19 p.m. Dubbed The Sunset Fire, it quickly caused the Los Angeles Fire Department to call for mandatory evacuations within ten minutes when the fire exploded to 20 acres.
It was such a swiftly changing fire that it caused panic in Hollywood as people tried to escape the area, causing gridlock on Hollywood Boulevard going east and west. The evacuation warning stretched to the west in the Hollywood Hills directly above West Hollywood and into Beverly Hills.
The West Hollywood LASD warning residents of West Hollywood to “Be prepared, pack important documents and gather family, children and pets now. We will update with information as it becomes available.” at 7:00 p.m.
Firefighters sprang into action and since the winds were not raging as they had on Tuesday night, air support was able to help control the fire before it became larger.
At 9:18 p.m., the West Hollywood LASD said, via social media statement, “Fire activity has DECREASED. The fire has been updated to be 60 to 100 acres but is now mostly burning within the perimeter LAFD worked quickly to develop. A small half-acre second fire on Nichols Canyon was also put out.”
