Future of Norms La Cienega to Be Decided at Cultural Heritage Commission Meeting

Plans to Open a Raising Cane’s on the Landmark Site to Be Reviewed This Week

The future of Norms La Cienega, a beloved mid-century landmark and Historic-Cultural Monument #1090, will be discussed on December 5 when the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission reviews plans to rehabilitate the building for use as a Raising Cane’s restaurant.

Norm’s lease for the property ends in December 2026, and if the change is approved by the Commission, the location would become a Raising Cane’s restaurant in 2027. 

The 1957 Googie-style diner, designed by celebrated architect Armet & Davis, is one of the city’s most iconic examples of the space-age aesthetic that defined Los Angeles roadside architecture. While its historic designation protects the structure from demolition and ensures alterations align with preservation guidelines, it cannot mandate the continuation of its original use as a diner.

Norms was founded in 1949 by Los Angeles native Norm Roybark. The La Cienega location became a flagship for the chain, which expanded to 18 locations across Southern California. Known for its bold design and affordability, the restaurant chain holds a special place in the city’s cultural and architectural history.

The Cultural Heritage Commission urges community members to participate in the meeting and provide feedback on agenda item #4, either in person, virtually, or via written comments.
