Celebrating LGBTQ+ Stories: WeHo Reads Event Explores Queer Families and Community

Join Authors and Poets on Oct. 9 for a National Coming Out Day Discussion

The City of West Hollywood is gearing up for another season of its acclaimed literary series, WeHo Reads, which has been bringing diverse authors and notable voices to the community since 2013. The 2024 season, produced by BookSwell, will offer both in-person and online events, inviting audiences to explore a variety of compelling topics.

On Wednesday, October 9, at 6:30 p.m., WeHo Reads will host a discussion titled “Creating Queer Families and Communities” in honor of National Coming Out Day. This event will feature authors and poets reflecting on the journey of coming out and the formation of LGBTQ+ families. The discussion will cover themes like the importance of storytelling, the impact of community, and the pathways to queer parenting.

Featured speakers include:

  • Meliza Bañales, poet and author of Life Is Wonderful, People Are Terrific, a Lambda Literary finalist novel.
  • Lane Igoudin, shares his experiences as a foster-adoptive parent in his memoir A Family, Maybe.
  • Hazel Kight Witham, whose The Truth About Secrets delves into personal journeys in memoir-in-verse form.

Viewers can watch the event live on the WeHo Arts YouTube channel here:

RSVPs are recommended for those attending in person. The WeHo Reads season is produced with additional support from Book Soup and the Los Angeles Review of Books.
