Maher Targets Roan’s Political Views and Lyrics and Generation Z
Talk show host and comedian Bill Maher used his weekly HBO show to launch a disturbing attack on queer music artist Chappell Roan on the same weekend while the singer is on her Midwest Princess tour, playing at the Austin City Limits Festival. In the “New Rules” Segment he stated, “New rule to mark the Oct. 7 anniversary: We must launch a campaign to educate young Americans about the Middle East.”
Maher, whose style is marked by contrarianism and scorn, decided that he was the one to educate Generation Z and the 26-year-old Roan after she expressed sympathy and support for Palestinians. During the segment, which Maher has pinned to his Twitter profile, he pointed out that the artist had insisted that neither side of the American political system was completely right and that critical thinking was necessary, claiming, “That sounds like something I would say.”
He then gave his own capsule version of the history of Palestine and Israel and implied that Generation Z only gets their information from TikTok.
Maher then said, holding her songs up for ridicule while implying that she would be murdered in Palestine, “Chappell, if you think it was repressive growing up queer in the Midwest, try the Mideast. You’re a female drag queen and you sing ‘I fucked you in the bathroom when we went to dinner at your parents.’ That wouldn’t fly in Gaza, although you would, straight off a roof.”
He then referenced another lyric from the song Casual, stating that the “Morality Police would probably figure out that wasn’t about the drive-through and kill your feather boa-wearing a**.”
Roan has not responded to the segment.
