City Council Unanimously Votes to Approve Pride Flag Ordinance
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass signed an ordinance last Friday to fly the LGBTQIA+ Pride Flag above Los Angeles City Hall and over other Los Angeles City Buildings during Pride month. The initiative, spearheaded by Councilman Tim McOsker, marks a historic moment for the city.
The Los Angeles City Council approved the motion unanimously.
“I’m proud to have signed this historic motion to fly the pride flag over City Hall,” Mayor Bass said. “Our message to the rest of the country and to the world is clear – now more than ever, we must stand together. I want to thank Councilman Tim McOsker and the rest of the City Council for working together to get this done. We know the harm that discrimination and hate bring, and I’m proud that in Los Angeles, we accept our LGBTQIA+ community with open arms.”
The first rainbow Pride Flag was designed in 1978 by Gilbert Baker and was intended to be a “symbol of hope” for the LGTBQ community and another symbolic option other than the pink triangle.
