Walnuts From Gibson Farms Have Sickened Six People in California
Health officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), regulatory authorities in multiple states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are collaborating to investigate a widespread outbreak of E. coli O157 infections.
Data from epidemiological studies and traceback investigations indicate that organic walnuts distributed by Gibson Farms, Inc. may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria, potentially causing illness among consumers. As of April 30, 2024, a total of 12 individuals across two states have reported being infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli (refer to map). The onset of illnesses occurred between February 1, 2024, and April 4, 2024 (refer to timeline). Among the 11 cases with available information, seven individuals (64%) required hospitalization. Additionally, two patients have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe complication leading to kidney failure. No fatalities have been reported.
Bulk walnuts from Gibson Farms have been distributed to retail stores in Brentwood, Compton, Culver City, and Mar Vista.
Authorities caution that the actual number of affected individuals is likely higher than reported, as many people recover from E. coli infections without seeking medical attention or undergoing testing. Furthermore, it may take several weeks for recent illnesses to be linked to the outbreak.
