City Hosts a Series of Events and Performances To Honor Transgender People
By Dolores Quintana
The City of West Hollywood, in conjunction with its Transgender Advisory Board, acknowledges November as Transgender Awareness Month. Pioneering progressive and inclusive policies since its inception in 1984, the city emphasizes the celebration of diversity and acceptance.
Throughout Transgender Awareness Month, the City of West Hollywood will display the blue, pink, and white Transgender flag at West Hollywood City Hall and illuminate the globe lanterns along Santa Monica Boulevard in these hues until November 20, 2023.
Several events are planned for the month, including the TransDiaries performance by Hollywood NOW on November 11 and 12, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room. Additionally, the city is co-sponsoring events hosted by trans-led organizations in Los Angeles, such as the TransLatin@ Coalition’s GARRAS Fashion Show on November 18, The Church of Trans Love’s Trans Love Dance on November 17, and the Unique Woman’s Coalition’s (UWC) TransGiving Dinner on November 19, 2023.
The city will host an in-person Transgender Day of Remembrance Ceremony on November 15, 2023, at 6:00 p.m., commemorating lives lost to anti-transgender violence. The event will be broadcast live on WeHoTV channels and streams.
Reflecting on the sobering statistics provided by the Human Rights Campaign, which reported 25 transgender or gender non-conforming people fatally shot or killed by violent means in the U.S. in 2023, the City of West Hollywood reaffirms its commitment to advocating for the rights of the LGBT community.
With over 40% of its residents identifying as part of the LGBTQ+ community, the city, renowned for its advocacy, forms a Transgender Advisory Board and regularly sponsors programming to recognize Transgender Awareness Month and Transgender Day of Remembrance each November. The city’s Transgender Resource Guide, available on its website, provides essential information about legal, health, and social services in the Greater Los Angeles area, contributing to the well-being of transgender individuals.
