Bored Gay Ghosts Haunt Inhabitants and Themselves in a Charming Desert Cabin
Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, has secured the North American Video-On-Demand (VOD) rights for the comedic horror feature film, “The Jessica Cabin.” The quirky and haunting film is now available for rental and purchase on various digital HD platforms, cable and satellite providers across North America, and a DVD release on September 26, 2023, through Freestyle Digital Media. The film had its premiere at a screening at the Ebell Theater in Los Angeles on October 30.
“The Jessica Cabin.” is a unique queer narrative that delves into themes of love and loss. It unfolds as a heartbroken young man finds himself trapped in a remote rental property inhabited by two lonely spirits. Nicky and his boyfriend, Preston, decide to rent a cabin in the desert for an extended romantic weekend. Unbeknownst to them, their actions are being closely observed by two enigmatic figures, the ghosts Jackson and Taylor. These restless spirits, dismally bored with their afterlives, develop a peculiar interest in Nicky. Observing questionable behavior from Preston, Jackson, and Taylor employ their ghostly abilities to intervene in the couple’s relationship.
Following an argument between the pair, Nicky ends up alone at the cabin, watched over by Jackson and Taylor. Driven by loneliness, the ghosts make a reckless decision to ensure that Nicky remains with them eternally. This results in an unforeseen and intricate entanglement as the three souls must coexist in the cursed cabin. Amid their tumultuous dynamic, they grapple with complex emotions of resentment, regret, and attraction. Throughout their time together, they also uncover revelations dating back to the cabin’s initial forlorn occupant, Jessica.
Written and directed by Daniel Montgomery, “The Jessica Cabin.” was brought to life through the production efforts of Daniel Montgomery and Riley Rose Critchlow of Mary-Kate and Ashtray Productions, Brendan Haley of Lonely Spectre Productions, Chase Williamson, and Jenna Marie Johnson. The film features a talented ensemble cast, including Daniel Montgomery (as ‘Jackson’), Riley Rose Critchlow (as ‘Taylor’), Chase Williamson (as ‘Nicky’), Will Tranfo (as ‘Preston’), Kylee Thurman (as ‘Jessica’), and Melinda DeKay (as ‘Mrs. Norris’). “The Jessica Cabin” is a co-production of Mary-Kate and Ashtray Productions and Lonely Spectre Productions, in association with Simulated Sky and ReKon Productions.
Filmmaker Daniel Montgomery shared his inspiration behind the film: “I wanted to explore something I’d never seen portrayed onscreen, namely, gay ghosts. “The Jessica Cabin.” is about the universal desire to find authentic and intimate connection, told through a decidedly queer lens. The drama doesn’t come from the horror of being queer; rather, it’s just an aspect of the characters’ lives. Or, in this case, after-lives.”
The acquisition of “The Jessica Cabin.” was negotiated directly by Freestyle Digital Media with filmmaker Daniel Montgomery and Lisha Yakub of ReKon Productions.
