Invertigo Dance Theatre Unveils Spellbinding Journey of ‘Formulae & Fairy Tale

Mathematics, Cryptography, and Queer Stories at the Broad Stage

Experience a captivating blend of mathematics, cryptography, and beautifully unconventional fairy tales with Invertigo Dance Theatre’s enthralling performance of “Formulae & Fairy Tales.” This enchanting production is scheduled for October 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Broad Stage, promising an immersive journey through movement, theatricality, video projections, and an original musical score, all choreographed by Laura Karlin and performed by a talented ensemble of seven dancers.

“Formulae & Fairy Tales” offers a fresh perspective on the brilliance of mathematical genius and World War II codebreaker Alan Turing. It delves into Turing’s profound contributions to computer science and artificial intelligence, including his remarkable achievement of cracking the supposedly unbreakable Enigma Code used by the Nazis. This performance also explores the intricate relationship between Turing’s queer identity, the persecution he faced, and his groundbreaking scientific discoveries. Despite his extraordinary accomplishments, Turing’s life was marked by secrecy and state-sponsored violence due to his homosexuality, ultimately leading to his tragic death by consuming a cyanide-laced apple.

Laura Karlin, Artistic Director of Invertigo Dance Theatre, describes the production as “a love letter to a great mind” and a powerful statement of hope, redemption, and a relentless desire to create a better world for all. “Formulae & Fairy Tales” playfully deconstructs binary thinking and artificial intelligence while examining our complex and timeless connection with technology.

The choreography of “Formulae & Fairy Tales” seamlessly weaves together Turing’s fascination with Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and his fateful encounter with a poisoned apple. This intricate dance-theatre work explores historical events, sexuality, gender identity, and our shared humanity. Dancers transform into a gender-bending Snow White tableau, individuals leisurely walking their computers in the park, London Blitz survivors, the inner workings of the Enigma Machine, a fairy tale forest, and a poignant duet depicting two men sharing an apple between their mouths.

Originally premiered in 2019, “Formulae & Fairy Tales” remains highly relevant as artificial intelligence continues to integrate into our lives, and the struggle against government-supported violence targeting the LGBTQ+ community persists. The performance thoughtfully addresses these vital issues and reclaims agency in these conversations.
